Barbecuing pizza is an alternative to the usual method of baking it. Using a grill to cook pizza is a way to mimic preparation in a wood-fired oven, which is a traditional method of preparation. All you need to barbecue pizza is basic ingredients, such as pizza dough; mozzarella cheese; sauce; toppings, such as tomatoes, peppers, and pepperoni; some cooking oil; and a grill. As a bonus, the smoke from the grill will give the pizza extra flavor, creating a pizza-eating experience that differs from what you expect with a typical oven-baked pizza.

Before barbecuing a pizza, you will have to prepare and lay out all of the ingredients needed to create the pizza. You can prepare the dough for the pizza yourself or roll out a ready-made crust, and then pour some cooking oil into a bowl for moistening the pizza crust while barbecuing. Then, you will need to gather the tomato sauce, cheese, and other toppings for the pizza. While you get the ingredients ready, you can warm the grill and grease it with cooking oil or spray.

When the grill is greased and hot, it's time to place the pizza dough on the grill and close the lid. You'll have to let the dough cook for a couple of minutes or until the bottom of the pizza crust is browned. Next, you'll need to take the pizza crust off of the grill and spread the crust with some of the cooking oil and a thin layer of sauce. Finally, you can place any desired toppings on your pizza. When placing toppings on a pizza, cooking experts generally recommend creating thin layers to prevent the pizza from becoming soggy and difficult to eat.

There are many different kinds of toppings you can use when you barbecue pizza. Sausage, pepperoni, and even seafood are common. Vegans and vegetarians often use dairy-free cheese, vegetables, and even fruits. You can create an all-meat barbecue pizza, an all-vegetable version, or even skip toppings and enjoy plain cheese instead.

After you have added toppings, you'll need to place the pizza back onto your grill. Then, let the pizza cook for a couple of additional minutes or until the cheese has melted. Once the cheese melts, you can take the barbecue pizza off the grill and let it cool for a few minutes before you slice and serve it.
