Can I Remove Skin Tags at Home?

health wellness

Skin tags can be irritating and unattractive, especially when they seem to pop up continuously. Making frequent trips to a physician to remove skin tags can be just as irritating. Fortunately, there are a few different ways that you can remove skin tags from the comfort of your own home.

Before you attempt to remove skin tags, you should be completely certain that you are in fact dealing with skin tags, rather than a more serious growth. A skin tag is very small and grows slowly, never reaching a size greater than ½ inch (1.27cm). The skin tag may appear to be a flap of skin or a small round mass attached to the skin by a peduncle or stalk. The skin tag should be soft and movable, with a pigmentation that is similar to the rest of your skin or slightly darker.

Once you have established what you are dealing with, you can begin to remove skin tags. One way to do this is to tie a piece of thread or dental floss tightly around the base of the skin tag. Then, with thoroughly cleaned sharp scissors or a nail clipper, cut the skin tag off above the material that you tied around the base. Make sure that after you remove skin tags, you keep the areas clean with peroxide or antibacterial ointment until they are healed. This procedure is relatively painless and similar to the procedure that a doctor may perform. A skin tag should not appear again on the same site, but if it does, you should consult a physician.

Another method to remove skin tags that does not yield immediate results, but is far less intrusive, involves creating a mixture of castor oil and baking soda. Mix these two ingredients together to form a thick paste and apply it frequently, several times a day, to remove skin tags. Eventually, within two weeks, the skin tags will dry up and disappear.

Some people remove skin tags at home by applying solutions designed for wart removal. Some people find these products more effective to remove skin tags than to remove warts. There are also many over-the-counter products that are specifically designed to remove skin tags at home, but they are not as efficient as removing the skin tags simply by cutting them off.

to those of you who wonder whether that process can work for anal skin tags: my proctologist told me i had a skin tag on my anus, but it was a hemorrhoid. do not try to tie off a hemorrhoid! no matter how small. the blood wants to get in there, and you will just exacerbate the situation. and then your doctor will yell at you...it's not nice. ouch.

I wish I would have found this website sooner. I did go to the doctor yesterday and had 4 skin tags removed. She gave me 3 shots that hurt like I was in a torture camp. Then she cut the tags off and applied a silver substance to stop the bleeding. Well the silver substance turned black in each hole..... yes I said hole. When she cut the skin tags off she took a little bit more than the tag and it has left divots in my skin!!! Looks terrible and is very painful. I wish I would have found your advice and done the method listed instead of going to the doctor who butchered and damaged the delicate skin!!! I have 2 more tags in different areas that I will remove myself!!! Thank you for this webpage...for my future reference :)

After years of being embarrassed about my armpit, I finally asked my friend to help me cut them. In the past I bought Dermatend online but that didn't do anything but irritate my armpit and probably permanently damaged it. My friend told me about the tying and I finally tried it but didn't get at the root so it got swollen and started bleeding out a nasty liquid that smelled bad. One of my friends volunteered to cut it for me so I bought a new pair of tiny and very sharp scissors and it was painless and even though I bled a lot, I'm so happy it is gone! My skin tags were pretty big about the size of a lady bug? I'm glad to be rid of them so I can wear sleeveless shirts!

1. Don't tie if you don't get at the root of the tag!

2. Cutting is very painless, don't fret.

3. Sterilize your scissors!

4. Ice helps a ton.

OK it is gone a skin tag not small but not huge either near the groin. I tried the dental floss routine for a few days but it kept coming off and was uncomfortable. Finally, after reading the posts I followed the nurses procedures. I am sure I wouldn't have thought to clean and follow the protocol if I had not read that post. I retied dental floss and kept it taunt with tweezers and used my small German nail clippers. I was scared but determined. It worked without any pain. The ice applied first was helpful. Noticed the bit of tail to the tag was still there and so I sniped it again. Virtually no blood and painless like popping a pimple really. I finished it off with peroxide and a bit of septic powder we keep for the dogs when we cut their nails. A band aid wasn't necessary but I put it on just to keep myself from checking it out. Thanks for all the posts.

One more thing....a nice stiff rum and coke helped both before and after the procedure!
Editor's reply: alcohol and cutting skin tags sounds like a bad combination to me!

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!! anon1381 aka nurse. Finally built up the courage to use sterilized nail clippers to remove a rather large skin tag from my eyelid. Pressed ice on it for about 20 seconds then slid the clippers over the tag..stretched the eyelid with tag inside of the clippers and snip........gone! Very little pain or blood (and I'm a big wimp). Cleansed area with hydrogen peroxide afterwards. Looks great..think I'm good to go! Will keep you posted.

I have had numerous skin tags removed by dermatologists in the past, but I have one that was underneath my right eye that I kept playing with, so I decided to see if I could remove it myself this time. I managed to snip a tiny bit of it off without any pain or bleeding, but upon attempting to get the rest of it, I hesitated when I felt a bit of pain. Upon doing further research, I discovered on another site that vinegar removes skin tags, so I decided to give it a shot. I dipped a cotton swab in a small amount of vinegar and held it to the skin tag for a minute or two. I noticed that it began to turn lighter in color. After a few more minutes, I began to rotate tag with the swab and noticed that it appeared to be peeling away layer by layer and getting smaller and smaller. Within 10 minutes, there was a small amount of transparent skin remaining, which I snipped off without any pain or bleeding. I could not believe it! It disappeared right before my eyes! There was only a bit of redness surrounded by a thin, white ring in the area where the tag was located. With another cotton swab, I applied a tiny bit of tea tree oil and within 10 minutes, the white ring and redness were gone. You can't even tell where the tag was. I never would have thought that vinegar would remove it. I just thought I'd pass this along to anyone who might be afraid to snip. Just be mindful that if you have sensitive skin, the vinegar and/or tea tree oil may cause some redness and/or slight irritation. Good luck!

I am amazed as the suggestions about the dental floss, rubbing alcohol, ice, and nail clippers worked like a charm! I cannot hardly believe that this tag that has bothered me for years is finally off. I've begun exercising more and it was right under my right breast. I have noticed that it would rub against my sports bra and be raw and red as a result. I have to add that for me it was completely painless and blood free. I have put a bandage on it but anticipate no problems at all. Thanks so much for addressing this issue!
Posted by: anon14363
anon1381. thank you. worked fine.

Thanks all of you for the support and encouragement your words have provided. I have sufferred with skin tags in the groin region for years. After reading your posts, I decided to just do it...to the biggest one anyway..3 more to go. I didn't need ice or to tie it. I just sterilized the location and nail clipper and clip..clip..didn't hurt at all. Thanks again!!!!

Day 3 since tying off the larger of the 2 skin tags I was dealing with. Each day, I'd tighten the sterilized 8 lb monofilament. This morning, I rubbed ice on the tag for 2 minutes, pulled it tight with sterilized tweezers, and snipped it off with sterilized toe clippers.

Piece of cake! And this is being told to you from someone who has a great fear of needles. (Well, OK there were no needled involved... call me "chicken) The bottom line is this: This procedure works!

As far as the person asking if this can be done on the eyelid, I see no reason to be overly concerned about it.

Posted by: anon14280
I want to add my thanks and reassure people that the anticipation is SO much worse then the act itself.

Over the last year I've developed a number of skin tags in various places. 2 of the spots have bothered me more then the others, my inner thigh and my armpit.

My first removal was one of those "accidental" removals. The tag on my inner thigh was pretty large and was getting irritated from me wearing jeans and walking a lot, so I put a bandaid on tightly before one trip out because I knew we would be walking for hours that day. The next morning I woke up to take my shower and when I removed the band aid, the skin tag was no more.

My under arm skin tag is also in an annoying place, it is right where my bra meets my inner armpit and it is *constantly* being irritated by that. I've read more and more "do it yourself" ways and I knew that I would be able to snip it off but...

I'm a phlebotomist, I'm not squeamish... usually. There is something entirely different about doing things to yourself. I had to use scissors because my nail clippers are too curved and it would be too awkward of an angle. I started reading more of the posts on this thread and decided to just do it, I had my sewing thread nearby and I tied the tag off.

Then chickened out again and kept reading.

Said "screw this! I'm being a baby" out loud to myself and went to the kitchen for an ice pack (bag of frozen corn I usually use on my sore knee). I put the ice pack under my arm and walked to the bathroom where my scissors were soaking in alcohol, then cleaned everything and chickened out another minute then finally pulled and snipped.

Seriously, the chickening out and anticipation wasted more time then it was worth. I actually had more pain from the ice touching my skin! Yes, a little bit of blood, but I put gauze on it and have my arm tight to my side while I type this. To sum it up, this is my advice.

1. Use alcohol to clean the area and cutting utensil

2. Use ice to lessen the pain (waaaay more effective then I thought it would be)

3. Do NOT over-think this! It will just make you more nervous.

4. Clip/snip in a quick motion.

5. Wipe it down with alcohol when done (or peroxide) and keep a bit of pressure on it.

Thank you all very much for making me finally decide to do this. Now to take care of the other ones...

I have a small one under my eye and a few small ones on my neck. Really want to get rid of the one under my eye and would like to do the Nurse's instructions from above, however I am afraid it will leave a scar. Anyone have a problem with scarring?
Posted by: JoeSixpack
Got a new method! I've had a pesky skin tag under my armpit for a couple weeks. After reading the instructions on self-removal, I took 12" of 8 lb test monofilament fishing line (unused, of course) and soaked it in alcohol. I made a knot leaving a 3-4" loop so my girlfriend could pull the tag with tweezers to assure I tied it at its base. Once I tied the line tight, it snipped the skin tag right off! No bleeding, less pain than a pin prick.

A 2nd skin tag was not as cooperative as the first, but it's now tied with the same type of "sterilized" fishing line and will without a doubt fall off in a matter of days.

Posted by: anon14002
Does anyone have a treatment method for doing this for skin tags on the eyelid? I have a small one on my eyelid buy am reluctant to try snipping on such a delicate area of the body.

As anon12977 said, I've had one on my armpit which fell off. I think this was a combination of a hair wrapping around it and cutting off blood supply also using one of those mineral salt deodorants.

Woo hoo !! im sooo glad i read this i applied ice to my chin where i had my skin tag tied it off w/floss and toe nail clipped the thing rite off easy and painless...THANKS!
Posted by: anon13924
wow, I had a rather large tag on my underarm and did exactly as the nurse said, only I needed to tie it off twice to get all of it. I tried to get as close to the base as i could, but while pulling on the thread to stretch it out, I realized I needed another piece of thread to cut off blood flow. After numbing it with ice and rubbing alcohol on the surrounding area and clippers, I clipped it right off with no pain. It was actually more uncomfortable tying it than cutting it off and even that did not hurt. just glad to get rid of it. I could not tie it off myself with one hand so I had to talk a friend into helping.

I have two on my neck. I eased them out with tweezers then snipped at them with scissors. but neither one of them cut off.....so I put a plaster on with Vitamin E, and today i took it off and they are still as large as life!! I guess I need sharper scissors!!! The nail clippers scare me!!!

Using the tweezers made things easier to get at them though....I'll have to try again!! YUK!!!

Posted by: anon13847
Wow! I've had this skin tag for years. It is located between by underarm and breast and so I became very self-conscious about wearing tank tops because it often showed or caught on my clothes. I had talked to a nurse friend and she told me it was safe to do at home if careful. I was scared, but after reading these comments I decided to do it. I did it a few minutes ago!! If I can do it anyone can. I followed the instructions the nurse above suggested and it was quick and easy. Thanks

I had one in my inner thigh and I just twisted it until it fell off, it really just fell off and wasn't painful at all, I mean there was a small pinch when I started twisting, but after that nothing. It's really cool I was just watching tv and thought hey let me see if I can stop the blood flow by twisting it and next thing I know 5 mins later it popped off.
Posted by: swedeville1
Well I did it last night. I followed the directions from our knowledgeable nurse above. At first I used the dental floss and cuticle scissor method with the help of my wife. The pain was mostly non-existent (a slight pinch, actually the tying of the floss was a bigger irritant than the cutting was!!!) After I realized that it didnt hurt I had my wife switch over to the tweezer grab and cuticle scissor cut method. This was much faster and easier for her to do. when it was all said and done I had her cut off 25 tags located around my neck and chest area. Took about 45 min due to the prep work for each area. Im pretty excited about having them off I feel nice and smooth now. I would highly suggest you do this yourself. Just do it! you wont regret it.

Use a Vitamin E capsule squeezed onto the plaster afterwards and you will find the healing will leave no scar..amazing stuff! I am going to try the removal process tonight.....aaaaaaaagh!!! I want them gone more than I am afraid of doing it though, so I am going to do it! Thanks for all the encouragement and testimonials!!

( this is weird ) i had accidentally gotten a string caught around one of my skin tags on my armpit without me knowing and it had cut the circulation off of the skin tag. after three days without me realizing it had fallen off! It was freaky and I am starting to question... should I do that with my other skin tag? It was totally painless.

Help me!

I was the one who asked if anyone had success with baking soda and castor oil. I have had a heck of a time. I have been applying the mixture frequently to one small site that happens to be in the armpit area. My skin tags when from small and painless, to swelling to approximately 4x the size and so red and sore it hurt to move my arm. Being female and wearing a bra is about more than I can handle. It is beyond discomfort. I was wondering if anyone had used the baking soda/castor oil method and if this reaction is normal. I think I am just going to snip them off if it doesn't get better, but now that they have grown so big in such a short time, I am worried about bleeding... any advice?
Posted by: anon12589
so far no one has had success with the castor oil and baking soda method???
Posted by: anon12586
Thx much to the nurse who gave a detailed plan :)

I've accidentally shaved one off near my underarms and surprisingly, the pain and bleeding was minimal. The tag did come back and I have yet to remove it, accidental or otherwise. I've since grown a few more so I'll likely be setting up a home surgery suite in the next few days. Such annoying things, these skin tags!

Posted by: anon12573
Writing from experience, I would try the self-treatment method folks, especially after all the positive comments posted here.

I went through the excise procedure in a doctor's office this morning and dearly wish I had found this site before I went. I was given Lydocaine under EACH skin tag supposedly to ease the pain. The needle for the lydacaine shots probably hurt more than just getting the skin tags cut-off?!?! She then cut off each skin tag and then cauterized the area where each skin tag had been. That hurt also!

I still have some skin tags under my arms. I think I will have my wife help me do the self-treatment before I spend the time and money to go through the process in the doctor's office. It certainly couldn't hurt more than the shots and the cauterizing. And it will save some money.

I had a lot of skin tags along my cheek bones for years and always wanted to get rid of them. I took the nurse's advice and tied a string around them real tight (ran out of floss) and clipped them off with the nail clipper. I was nervous at first, but after I removed the first one, I was so excited, I couldn't wait to remove the rest. It was like a little pinch, no pain and only a dot of blood and no blood on some of them. I had been contemplating going to the doctor for years, but I was scared and I knew the cost. If I did it you can too.

I have had poison ivy on my throat and neck. The worst part is having skin tags all around the area (8-10 of them)and it just freaks me out to rub the area with cream or whatever and brush over these things. I think a couple of them on my throat are so tiny I may not be able to get the floss around them. But I want them gone!! They are just disgusting.

I am curious if it would be easier and just as quick and painless to use a straight edge razor..... the sharpest ever... If I can get up the nerve to do it, I'll let you know....

Posted by: anon12318
thank you to everyone for your posts...i've had a tag for ages down below and it's been upsetting me - i've even been and had it checked out a couple of times by various drs and they've all just reassured me it's a skin tag and i should leave it alone - but due to it's location it has been really upsetting me.

Anyway, I'm far too chicken to actually snip it off with clippers or scissors - i went out last night and was terrified it'd bleed lots or be really sore, but i managed to tightly tie a piece of dental floss around it yesterday afternoon, by this morning it's already shrunk and turned dark...fingers crossed it'll fall off soon.

Thank you to everybody. Really thank you :)

Posted by: anon12202
Success. The pesky tag came off today. I used the dental floss tie off method, I didn't tie it off tightly enough at first because the thing tripled in size and "weeped" for several days. So, I retied it really tightly. It turned dark, shrunk and fell off after 2 days.

Thanks!!

I'm 4 months pregnant and have 2 skin tags in my belly button and want them out before my belly button pops out!!! But the skin tags are dark, and look like ticks! I dont know if they are moles or what. Would it still be safe to remove it myself??? The dermatologist says he's uncomfortable injecting me with a local anesthetic, but my ob says it's safe. Should I make another appointment and tell the dermatologist we have the green light, and pay all that money? Or do it myself??

I recently removed two skin tags, using the dental floss method. I tied dental floss around the skin flap and number the area for 30 seconds or so with an ice pack and then clipped off the tag with a pair of professional cuticle clippers and it came off after a few nips or so. It was painless and it did bleed some, the tag that was larger bled more, in fact the smaller one hardly bled at all. Also no scarring whatsoever. I recommend doing the at home method, in fact my mom who is a nurse says it's a procedure that's safe and effective done at home, no need paying 225.00 or so to have a doctor do it, it's a waste of money & time.
Posted by: anon11821
This is great information. BUT... before I found this site (in fact, a couple of years ago) I just got up the nerve to cut one off in my armpit. I used a pair of cuticle scissors and was amazed at how TOUGH it was. And it "stung". All said, though, I'm glad I'm rid of it.

So why am I reading about them now? I have about ten in the "down under" place and I don't look forward to dealing with them but like others here, one in particular is beginning to abrade my legs. Thanks.

I have tied one of my anal skin tag tonight. The other one will be impossible to do I think. Within a few hours it has gone black. I was wondering if anyone can tell me if this is normal and whether I just need to persist with it. It is pretty painful now. I couldn't get it right at the root for some reason so do you think, when the end of it comes back I am still going to be left with a smaller tag? Even if I wanted to get the floss that I used off my tag I dont think I could!!! It is too tight now the tag has expanded around it. I dont know if what I have done is working or whether I have done a silly silly thing!!!

I have a Drs appointment on thursday to discuss surgery with her but i dont want to go if it is still black like this because I think the dr will be angry I tried to do it myself. What does anyone think? I would massively appreciate your ideas!

Posted by: anon11710
just did this, lots of blood and some pain.
Posted by: anon11681
has anyone had anal skin tags? Do you think these methods are safe in this area too?
Posted by: anon11500
thanks everyone for your advice and encouragement. my husband has several of these skin tags that he always wants me to clip off, but I am squeamish about these sorts of things and I always told him no. when he found this article and sent the link to me I agreed to do it. I still didn't like it, but I did it and it worked perfectly. I would recommend either old fashioned floss, the really skinny kind with no wax, or thread to tie it off. the one we used was a thicker kind of floss so the cut wasn't quite as close to the skin as he would have liked. in any case the biggest one is gone and I will do the others for him soon.

i've been putting iodine solution on mine for about a week and 1/2 twice a day and one of my 3 just fell off. granted, i had been picking at it a lot, but it fell off with no pain and no blood. one of the other ones has shrunk a lot and the 3rd one turned red and looks like it is about to fall off. doing this is no pain and no clippers. yay!
Posted by: anon11406
Thanks everyone for your input. Experience was just as described. I'm also squeamish, thought I couldn't do it. After the first one, I removed all 4. So grateful for your help-thanks ever so much.

I had one of these pesky things on my armpit for quite some time until tonight. The last couple of days it had started annoying me as it was catching all the time on my clothes. I had no alcohol wipes or anything like that and due to location, it was near impossible to wrap string or floss around the base (although i did try). I put the clippers under running hot water for a minute or so to sterilise them and just went for it. No pain and no blood and now i'm rid of the nuisance :) . Thanks for the info. Thought i'd have to see a doc to get this done but DIY'd it instead.

Castor oil & baking soda - has anyone tried this and if so, tell us how you did it and how it went from beginning to end, please.

Also, has anyone used this on a skin "flap" on their anus? (I have one left over from a 'roid but am kinda scared to try it. It doesn't have a stalk like the skin tags described in the forum).

Thanks for ANY info or advice!

Posted by: anon11246
I just cut three off. I am pleased to say they are all gone and I am thrilled. I used waxed floss and scissors. One was large and the other two were small. They all bleed for five minutes or so but now it stopped. This is a blessing because they are ugly and I hate going to the doctors. I was very embarrassed to tell my Doc. Thank all of you for giving testimony on these ugly things.

I had two skin tags in the inner thigh area that bothered me when I walked so I remembered what my coach use to say "just rub some dirt on it and you'll be alright". So I did and it hurt like h*ll and its now infected. just kidding!!! = ) just trying to lighten things up a bit.

But seriously! I didn't have any alcohol or HP around the house and I couldn't take it anymore so I took some mouthwash "which is an antispectic anyway" and after washing the area I rubbed it around the skin tags. I then used some dr.sholles "freeze away" and froze the tags. I took my clipers and snip! snip!. no pain at all! and only my bigger tag bleed just a little. I then applied some neosporin on a band aid and put them on over night.

Thats it! I'm free of these pestering tags! thanks everyone for the info. And NO, I didn't use the string either.

The tag that I have isn't like the ones normally described. It does not narrow at its base. It is about pea size and the same width at the base as it is at the top. Has anyone removed one like this? It is on the inside of my thigh, so right where my boxers and pants will rub. I am wondering how tying it off works with such a big base and how the healing goes with such a large wound afterwards.
Posted by: anon10691
I was suffering with a pea sized skin tag on the back of my arm for years. I received a disposable scalpel with some gardening equipment I bought recently and decided to use that to do the job. I heated the blade with a lighter so that it was definitely sterile, and sliced through it one go, there was very little sense of pain but it did bleed for some 15 minutes. Now its gone, I am so happy! Just do it!
Posted by: anon10594
Whoa. ok so years back I had one of these suckers on my nipple! It was awful and I was so freaked out. I went to a doctor all scared that I was dying or growing a third nipple or something equally horrifying. I was a young broke college girl and the guy snipped it right off no pain nothing. So now, years later here I am with my armpit itching all the time...and lo and behold I finally investigate why for days I have been having this irritation...skin tag! Damn. So I just did it, no nothing, no cleaning, no thread (could not get it on my armpit at that angle) cuticle clippers without any of that pesky alcohol or anything. I live on the edge. I did it, it stung mildly, like a mosquito bite. Its gone, no bleeding, lets just hope I don't die from a nasty infection!
Posted by: anon10544
Just done this now a bit ghetto style - tag was in a bit of an awkward place juuuuust in reach on my back, and am living in China at the moment so don't have anyone I can ask for help with - hence I couldn't get a loop knot around it, don't have a freezer to get ice from, and don't have any particularly short scissors (which, I suppose, I could go out and buy, but I'm also really lazy). So, after getting as cold a shower as I could manage I hacked away with a pair of somewhat blunt swiss army scissors. It took a bit of a going, to be honest, more pinching between the scissor blades than being cut. Didn't hurt much though, really, although it wasn't as far down the tag as I'd have liked. Either way, it's off now and still didn't bleed too much... is clotting up now. I think a bit of thread would've made the whole thing smoother, and I wouldn't recommend doing it like I have, but if for whatever reason you're in a similar situation to me it's not much more trouble!

Once it's off it's interesting just how disgusting they are. I must admit there was a mild temptation to put it in someone's sandwich, but I'm not quite that mean...

Posted by: anon10509
I was wondering how the person who tried castor oil and baking soda is doing...I've been going for 2 days and not much is happening.
Posted by: anon10425
I used all three methods tonight. I will say the canned air must be used carefully with the included straw as to minimize any damage to the skin surrounding. I left the floss around it of about an hour. I froze it and then used manicure scissors. It was painless except for actually seeing what your doing (if you know what I mean). It did bleed quite a bit and I would recommend to be near a tub depending on the location of the tag. Mine was a larger one so I'd say my shock value was high. It worked for me... I guess to each their own.
Posted by: anon10402
I once used a can of compressed air upside down to numb the tag, but you have to be very careful not to burn the surrounding skin. I am thinking combining all three might make a good suggestion. Use floss to isolate, canned air to deaden, scissors to cut. I'll try and post back!
Posted by: anon10332
I did it!!! I posted last night and was too chicken to try it until this morning. It was nothing. It was gone before the extremely _small_ pinch came and this was a _big_ skin tag -- I've had it for _years_ !!! I've had more painful pimples than that!!! I realize my excitement seems a bit odd, but I have truly suffered with my self confidence and having small children play with/or point to the big brown spot on my neck was near horrifying. Again, I realize it is just a skin tag to most, but to me it was bigger than a mountain. Thank you so much to all your comments. I followed the nurse-poster's protocol as I have to be careful of infections and so far so good.
Posted by: anon10313
Wow, sounds scary, but I have had one for years and it is annoying. Not to mention a little painful (getting caught in necklaces) but embarrassing. Little kids always point to it. I have had them removed by a doc before and frankly I thought that was painful. I will repost when I get up my nerve to do it. Thanks a ton!!!
Posted by: anon10230
I too had an unsightly skin tag. It was located directly below my left eye. I only recently discovered it was a skin tag, and had no idea that it could be removed.

I followed the nurse-poster's instructions, to the letter, and cut the tag off myself. (after tying it off with dental floss) It bled lightly for about two minutes, and the pain was a non-issue. I'll keep you posted on the healing process.

Thanks for making this post. I have had that tag for 20 years, and always hated it. Who knew the internet could be used for good. Thanks.

I followed the advice of anon1381 (nurse?) and have to say this went relatively easy.. cleansed area with iodine, boiled nail clippers 10 min, tied thread around skin tag tightly at the base(15min), iced it down 2 min prior and snip! The sound grossed me out more than the pain which was very minimal. Surprisingly there wasn't much bleeding either. Thanks to to entire thread and anon1381 for the advice.

I had no idea I could just snip them with nail clippers. I got rid of half a dozen that have been on my neck forever in about two minutes. Just a slight pinch, nothing more. So easy and painless.

I have just used the tying off method on a rather large skin tag. my doctor tied it with a piece of cotton thread and 5 days later it was plumper! I didn't expect this, so i went to see the doctor again and he said it wasn't tight enough and had swollen. Anyway, he re-tied it and it was very tight, it hurt for a couple of seconds and then felt fine. Within 24 hours the colour started to fade from it. After 3 days it was smaller and darker. it eventually came off after 5 days in my sleep. So my point is that if it doesn't start to lose its colour within 24 hours it may not be tight enough. There was very little pain or discomfort when it was tied.

I had a troublesome skin tag in my groin (around the size of a small pea), where it rubbed against my underwear was a considerable source of irritation.

Finally I decided to do something about it, so I tightly tied it off at the base with some cotton. This caused a little discomfort and stinging. By the next morning, the tag was an angry red/black colour and weeping a little. Not good, so I steeled myself and snipped it off with a pair of nail scissors I'd previously boiled in water for 10 minutes. This was painless, and it came cleanly away. The wound bled quite freely and heavily for around 5 minutes. I cleaned it and dressed it, and it's been fine ever since.

The nail clippers work great! I'd used scissors on one before and it was hard to get them in the right position and it hurt more. This time, I didn't use any floss because it was too small, but it barely bled anyway and all I felt was the pressure of the clippers. I'm so relieved I read this article!

I did it! I had these things for years I think. I thought they were warts but I asked a doctor about them when I went in for an ear infection. She said "I can make an appointment for my partner to snip them off" I was shocked! I can snip them off myself is all I can think. I'm sure it would have been over a hundred to do it. I used the nurses method and it worked great. They were on my neck for the most part. I had 3 around my eyes so I couldn't use the floss due to the small size. I just used the ice and clipped with the nail clippers. They came right off I was amazed. One is still bleeding so I have to go. Good luck all

Can you use peroxide if you don't have alcohol?

So I read this thread and decided to take another shot at removing the large skin tag located along my bikini line. It's been there for over a year and I was sick of it. So I followed the same procedure as suggested by the nurse and snipped it off with a pair of clippers. My skin tag had a relatively thick stalk and after several attempts at just squeezing the clippers, I finally just looked away and did it. While I could still feel it, it didn't necessarily hurt and the pain was lessened by not actually looking at it...duh. I would definitely recommend tying the floss around the base of the stalk because mine bled a lot afterwards without it. If you have a small or thin skin tag then I would definitely suggest cutting it off yourself because mine was about as large as a mole and it just barely hurt. Good luck!

I was too squeamish to cut it with clippers even after I had disinfected everything! The clippers were just too small and the tag is at an awkward angle on my neck. So I went out and bought Dr.Scholl's "Freeze Away" to try on the tag. I applied it about 10 minutes ago, and finally, that incessant pain from having a tag is gone! It's still there, but it has shrunk a little and hopefully will continue to do so. Absolutely no pain in applying the freeze applicator and definitely no pain following it. I'll post again to let you all know how well it worked and if it removed the tag.

Several months ago I found two skin tags in my groin area. One had become very irritated, so I figured, “How much could it hurt to just cut it off?” So I cut it off with some fingernail clippers. The pain was far worse than I ever imagined and the bleeding seemed to never end. So I left the other one until today when it became irritated. I so was dreading cutting it off, remembering all the pain and blood from the first one, but after a day of procrastination, I finally just took a pair of scissors and cut it off. To my surprise it didn't even hurt. Not even a little bit. It took about 5 minutes to stop bleeding and now it's over. Reading the above postings gave me the courage to cut it off and now it’s gone. Thanks to everyone who wrote.

I just decided to try the nurse's advice for removing skin tags. Can I just say, I'm really squeamish about knives, needles, etc. Although I thought I might lose it just from my heart palpitating, LOL, I gave it a try. I had a very small tag that tripled in size due to pregnancy, and I was very uncomfortable about it. It hurt and was always in the way, but doctors are costly. Following the methods posted above (with the exception of leaving the ice on longer due to paranoia), not only did I remove the tag in one shot, but there was absolutely no blood and such a small cut that it won't even scar. Even a doctor couldn't do better than that! Thanks for the freeing advice. I feel better already.

The hardest part was tying the dental floss. The procedure worked like a charm. Only the slightest bit of pain. Well worth it! If you can enlist a family member to help, all the better. Thanks for the suggestion! I was just about to order some high priced goop on-line. Glad I found this site!

Why was I walking around with these disgusting things on my neck!?!?! The nurse's instructions worked great. I did every step she suggested and it was so embarrassingly easy. Don't even bother with the other suggestions, this one was a winner. Now my neck is as smooth as before. No bleeding either, you can barely tell where they were. Thanks for the tips!

I tried the wart remover. Very painful! Actually burned my skin. So I'm excited about this info. I'm going to try the nurse's plan. Will let you know. Thanks for this article!

I was VERY squeamish about removing the tag myself. Only recently had it been giving me any type of discomfort. My husband tied a piece of thread around it on saturday morning, by sunday evening, the thread and the skin tag was gone. Very minimal pain during the initial tying of the thread and, an occasional dull aching type of sensation. No bleeding or soreness. A definite solution, free of charge.

Thanks to the nurse for the advice on how to do. I took off 6 in about 10 minutes. I didn't use dental floss though. I used tweezers to pull the buggers out a bit then had wife use small pair of scissors to cut them off. The 1st 4 had no bleeding at all! The biggest one actually bled some. Thanks again. I hated getting having them getting stuck in my sweaters and t-shirts!

I am convinced that if you tie the tags tight enough they will just drop off in a day or 2, I have tied 2 on my neck and will keep you posted as to whether they fall off or not........

I am in the process of using the wart remover. It is very painful. The areas on my neck that I applied it to are infected. I should have just clipped them off. i would not recommend this method to anyone.

Did the castor oil and baking soda work for anyone?
Posted by: anon6739
Ok, that was a bit more painful than I thought it would be.. it took me about 5 attempts before I had the courage to go all the way past the initial pinch pain.

Though I'm glad I got the bulk of it, I guess I couldn't get close enough to the dental floss to remove the whole thing. So now I have a tiny one... I tried trimming that some more, but it started bleeding so I stopped.

Should I worry about it growing back now, since the "root" is still there? Or will it remain the same size now that it lost its head? (Wow, this sounds so strange)

Posted by: anon6610
I just cut one off with cuticle clippers, no dental floss, I squeezed them down till I felt a pinch and it had already been cut through. It really only felt like being pinched by someone. No pain more than that. I'd would definitely do it with sterile equipment, but pain should not be a reason to not do it.

Skin tag warriors unite!....I had some in my groin area. I took the advice of using ice first and because I was too chicken, I then asked my wife to snip them with a pair of small scissors. (the kind used to cut hang nails). Worked great! One bled quite a bit but applying pressure stopped it after 5 minutes or so.

I was too nervous to do the "cut" myself. But the article and the detailed description from the nurse was very helpful. I had my husband read it before asking him to cut the skin tag off my neck. A straight edge nail clipper is a must. Our nail clipper had a little curve so a little skin came off along with the tag. Thank you so much for posting this article.

Too good to be true? I developed a skin tag "down there" after having my baby almost a year ago. It was ugly and I had a hard time feeling sexy with it there. I read through all of these posts looking for the horror story, I couldn't imagine that it could be soo easy. I am VERY squeamish, I can't even dig out my own splinter, so the thought of cutting off this piece of flesh was bone tingling. But, since nobody else seemed to have a problem with it I thought that I would give it a try. WOW!! I did follow the nurse's instructions (plus I put on a little triple antibiotic plus, you know with the pain killer). As I stood in my bathroom with a string over the tag and the clippers positioned over the base of the tag I was saying to myself (outloud), "just do it, Do It, DO IT!" But I couldn't bring myself to do the quick snap of the clippers. I found myself slowly pinching them. Finally, I decided that I didn't have it in me and I pulled the clippers away. What!?! The tag was in the clippers!!! I promise, there was NO PAIN. I didn't even realize that I had pinched the clippers hard enough. Thank you, thank you for this article!!!

Irritated and painful had become this new companion in my groin area. I found this website and followed the procedure posted by the nurse. Hesitant I was due to the pain I was already experiencing from the rubbing when walking. At each step leading up to the cut I anticipated the coming pain, but was delighted to be disappointed. But now for the cut. Clenching my teeth I squeezed the clipper. Anticlimactic it was. No pain. No blood. Sweet relief. Thanks to all those involved.

This article is great.. I tried to clip it with a nail clipper and it bled way too much.. Perhaps because I am taking Iron supplements..

I have decided to just get rid of them as much as possible by using a string..

How can I apply the string to the lowest part of the stalk? I am using dental floss as of now.. Is there anything better?

These skin tags are getting out of control on my groin which is why I am worried about clipping etc.. But some of them are too small to tie the string around

What should I do ?

I just think it is gross when a woman runs her hand across my bare back and feels them. Thanks for the info. I will give it a try.

I've just used the clipper method & it was completely painless. I pulled the dental floss as tight as I could and then clipped! I forgot to leave the floss tied on for a bit so it's bleeding at present but hopefully not for much longer!

yikes!! i developed a tag on my neck during my second pregnancy--i've been dying to get it removed. i don't think my medical insurance will cover it though. i will try one of the above suggestions. any word on if they ever grow back in the same place?

I had tried the wart remover product and didn't like the smell and that it affected the surrounding skin around the tag so I eventually stopped applying it.

Tonight I decided to again look at removing the tag which is fairly small and located mid rib . My intention was to try using just the dental floss and tie the tag off, allowing nature to take its course. Sitting there with the loop on snug and floss ends dangling to me was like I was a kid, slowly inching off a bandaid rather removing it in one quick less painful swoop. I decided to take it to the next step and use small scissors in removing the tag.

I did follow the methods given in the above comments by the nurse. I gathered my materials and kept everything very clean and ready to go. I found that applying a bit of ice beforehand worked well and you could tell the sensation was dulled. Truthfully, it did not hurt. Jabbing my finger with a sewing needle is more uncomfortable.

This is my own experience, I just now this evening did this. My suggestion is do what you feel is right for you whether that is see a doctor about removal or if you feel the tag is small enough to do yourself (given you have the proper prepped supplies on hand).

I am in the process of trying the castor oil and baking powder paste to remove my skin tag. I will repost in a couple of weeks to let you know if it worked or not.

Thanks for the advice, I just finished my self-surgery. I followed the instructions and removed a skin tag. I was planning on going to the doctor to do it, but after reading what is involved (and that this procedure is not covered by most health insurance plans), I decided to save some time and a lot of money.

Follow the instructions exactly. The best part of the advice is to use the ice to numb the area a bit before you clip the skin off.

I am a squeamish person when it comes to things like this, so I was definitely grossed out by this procedure but I got through it because you guys let me know exactly what to do.

Thank you!

hi, i was just wondering if there is anyone who used the Castor oil and baking soda to remove their skin tag? If so please can you provide me with information on how it went? if it worked, did it hurt, are there any scars? and so on.

I tried it and it works like a charm!

I just recently took off an annoying skin tag near my armpit, I clipped them with nail clippers now it's bleeding, how long should I put pressure on it before it stops?

Is this expected? I didn't tie it off or anything, perhaps I cut to low?

Thanks for posting such a useful article and a special thanks to the nurse who posted about using nail clippers. Scissors are clumsy when using them backwards in a mirror and can be hit-and-miss; nail clippers are spot on and "click!" the tag is gone. With my largest neck tag, I had to clip it three times to get it all!

My only addendum to this would be that I used a pair of tweezers (as suggested) to completely cut off the blood supply - it also gave me a large white flat bit of skin to aim for when cutting!

I've had lot's of skin tags over the years. I usually went to the doctor to have them removed. Recently I found a plastic tweezer used to remove ticks. It has a locking mechanism. I use that to hold the skin tag and then wrap the string around it. It gives you the ability to get the entire tag off with one clip of a small pair of sharp scissors. I highly recommend following the previous post by the nurse on how she prepped the area before and after. In case you can't stop the bleeding I've also used septic sticks. I recently found a spray on powder that does much the same thing.

I have had skin tags for years, and they had become so unsightly and numerous around my neck and underarms that I was embarassed to wear low-necked or sleeveless shirts, not to mention I had two rather large tags growing very close together on my neck that would get stuck on my necklaces. I wanted them taken care of and I wanted it done quickly, not some long drawn out process of applying ointment or tinctures for 2 months to slowly "melt" away my skin tags. I read this and thought I'd give it a try. The only thing that made me hesitant was the pain factor. Now, I can usually handle quite a bit of pain, but its the anticipation of that pain, that I'm consciously inflicting on myself, that I was worried about. Alas, I gave it a try. Here was my method:

Being a nurse, I knew the importance of proper cleansing of not only the nail clippers, but also the skin surrounding the tag. I cleansed the area to a radius of about 2 inches around each tag with alcohol and a firm rubbing motion. I then cleansed my nail clippers (use the larger ones if possible for easier handling and ease in fitting the tag between the blades) with alcohol and let both air dry for few minutes to ensure sterility. While they were drying, I took a long piece of thin dental floss (the long strings made it easier to handle) and tied a little loop in the center. I then looped it around the tag, working it as far down to the skin as possible. I found it helpful to pull out on the tag a bit to make sure the string was all the way down on the stalk. I pulled the strings as tight as possible to cut off as much of the blood supply as I could. I also found that if I left it tied very tightly for a few minutes, it decreased the sensation in the tag and thus, decreased that whole "pain factor". Before I went to cutting, I held an ice pack on the area for 30 seconds or so to further decrease the sensation and blood supply to the area. I grabbed my nail clippers and carefully placed the whole tag between the blades as far down towards the floss as possible. And squeezed. The pain was very minimal; just a pinching feeling. It hurt less than some of the times I had gotten them caught in clothing or jewelry. I left the string on the stalk as long as possible to decrease the amount of bleeding after I had cut off the tag. I applied some pressure with gauze for a few minutes and applied a bandaid tightly over the area for about another 10 minutes. After I was sure the bleeding had stopped, I cleaned the area again with some soap and water and applied antibiotic cream.

Now my neck and underarms are free from those unsightly skin tags and I can feel free to wear low-neck shirts and tank tops again! :)

Editor's reply: Thank you so much for that testimonial! The detail you added will no doubt be very useful to our other readers!
