Are Almonds and Peaches Related?

Yes, actually. Almonds and peaches are part of the same plant subgenus, Amygdalus. The almond is very much like a peach, but with a tough, leathery coating rather than a juicy pulp. The almond itself is similar to a peach pit.

More Peachy Almond Facts:

  • Peaches have been cultivated since 1000 BC — longer than any other fruit.

  • Both peach and almond cultivation began in China — almonds have been cultivated almost as long as peaches.

  • California grows 80 percent of the world's supply of almonds.
